SONAC 110

The Sonac 110 Single Point Liquid Level Switch is designed for plant engineers, maintenance teams, and operations managers who need dependable, low-maintenance level control or overflow protection in tanks, vessels, and pipelines handling crude and refined petroleum, solvents, and most other liquids, including those that constantly change physical or electrical properties.

This compact, self-contained 4-wire electronic switch uses a magnetostrictive resonant diaphragm sensor to provide reliable on/off level detection with a 100:1 wet/dry signal ratio. The sensor extends less than 1/4 inch into the vessel, making it ideal for extremely small vessels, pipes, and applications where minimal process intrusion is required.

Unlike traditional float or mechanical switches, the Sonac 110 operates with no moving parts, making it resistant to fouling, vibration, and turbulence. A built-in Auto Test self-checking circuit constantly verifies sensor integrity — any cable fault, component failure, or power loss immediately drives the relay to the alarm condition. This fail-safe design, combined with an all stainless steel construction rated to 2,000 PSIG and 220°F, ensures consistent performance, improved operational safety, and long service life in demanding industrial environments.

Features

Auto Test Self-Checking

The unique self-checking feedback loop constantly “proves” that the control is working properly and offers superior reliability in critical applications.

Fail-Safe Design

Any electrical or mechanical failure of sensor or component will cause a change of state to the Fail Mode. Redundant circuit components are used in critical locations.

Stable, Dependable Performance

The sensing technique provides a wet/dry ratio of 100:1 to provide dependable performance year in and out, without periodic adjustment.

No False Trips

Immune to surge or splashing liquids, providing reliable switching without nuisance alarms.

Compact

The electronic amplifier is located in an integral explosion-proof housing threaded to the rear of the sensor.

Versatile Power Supply

Standard units are designed to accept 115 Volts AC, 230 Volts AC, or low voltage DC input power.

Non-Intrusive

The sensor need not extend into the vessel beyond 1/4 inch, minimizing the possibility of product bridging.

Rugged

All stainless steel, heavy duty sensor resists damage from product abrasion or corrosion. No packing glands are used.

Applications

  • High Level Alarm or Control: Overflow protection and high-level shutdown in storage tanks, process vessels, and day tanks.
  • Pump Control or Inlet Starvation Alarm: On/off pump control and dry-run protection to prevent equipment damage.
  • Flow/No Flow Indication: Detects presence or absence of liquid flow in pipelines and process lines.
  • Low Level Alarm or Control: Low-level detection for process control, preventing pump cavitation and tank run-dry conditions.
  • Non-Dedicated Vessels: Senses virtually any liquid without adjustment when density or dielectric constants change between products.
  • High Temperature, High Pressure Service: The welded, all stainless steel sensor body is designed for service at temperatures to 220°F (+104°C) and pressures to 2,000 psig.
  • Fluids with Foam Blankets: The control ignores foam to indicate the true liquid level.

What type of sensing technology does the Sonac 110 use?

The Sonac 110 uses a magnetostrictive resonant diaphragm sensor. The diaphragm oscillates at approximately 40 kHz; when liquid covers the sensor face, the diaphragm is damped and the resulting signal change triggers the relay output.

What happens if the sensor cable is cut or a component fails?

+

The built-in AUTO TEST self-checking circuit constantly monitors sensor integrity. Any open or short circuit in the cable, or any sensor/component failure, immediately drives the relay to the alarm (fail-safe) condition.

Does the Sonac 110 require field calibration?

+

The unit is factory calibrated and no further adjustments should be required. A gain control potentiometer is provided if field adjustment is needed for unusual liquid services.

Can the Sonac 110 handle foamy liquids?

+

Yes. The magnetostrictive sensing principle ignores foam and detects the true liquid level, making it suitable for applications where foam blankets are present.

What mounting options are available?

+

The Sonac 110 can be side-mounted horizontally (standard) or top-mounted vertically with extended sensor options. Process connections include 3/4″ or 1″ NPT, raised-face ANSI flanges, and sanitary tri-clover fittings.
