Tactical Fuel Point Data Unit

Get a Quote

Varec 8240 TDU

The Varec® 8240 Tactical Data Unit is designed for fuel supply officers, logistics commanders, petroleum operations specialists, and military engineers managing bulk liquid assets at expeditionary fuel points, forward operating bases, and remote industrial sites with no permanent gauging infrastructure.

Unlike generic data acquisition units or manual tank gauging approaches, the 8240 TDU is a purpose-built field computation device for collapsible storage tank environments. It polls up to four 7660 Tactical Fuel Gauges and four Tactical Flow Meters, performs automated tank strapping of up to 1,000 data points per CST, and calculates API-corrected fuel volumes to 60 °F per API Tables 5b/6b.

A no-tools ground-rod mount, −40 °F to +167 °F operating range, non-volatile strapping-table memory, and military-style quick disconnects support rapid setup, teardown, and redeployment across austere sites. Up to 7 TDUs daisy-chain from a single 8250 TIC for fuel points of up to 28 tanks.

Hazardous-area approvals include ISA/CSA Class 1 Division 2 Groups C and D and ATEX/IECEx Ex II 3(1)G Ex nA [ia Ga] IIB T5 Gc for safe operation in fuel-vapor environments. The 8240 integrates natively with the 7660 TFG and feeds FuelsManager® upstream through the 8250 Tactical Interface Converter.

Features

Automated Tank Strapping

Dynamically builds a unique gauge chart up to 1,000 data points per CST, compensating for construction variance and bulge that make manual estimates unreliable.

API Volume Correction

Calculates observed fuel volumes corrected to 60 °F using API Tables 5b/6b at the point of measurement, supporting custody-transfer-grade accuracy without manual post-processing.

Multi-Device Integration

Simultaneously polls up to four 7660 TFGs and four Tactical Flow Meters on one unit, consolidating an entire fuel point into one validated stream.

No-Tools Ground-Rod Mounting

Attaches directly to a standard military grounding rod without tools, so a full fuel point is instrumented in minutes with minimal equipment and personnel.

Hazardous-Area Certified

ISA/CSA Class 1 Div 2 Groups C/D and ATEX/IECEx Ex II 3(1)G Ex nA [ia Ga] IIB T5 Gc approvals cover global deployments.

Non-Volatile Strapping Storage

Gauge charts and device addresses persist in non-volatile memory through power interruptions, so volume calculations resume automatically when field devices come back online.

Applications

  • Forward Operating Base Fuel Points: Multi-tank CST farms need consolidated inventory; one TDU aggregates up to four gauges and four flow meters into one data feed for command visibility.
  • Expeditionary Aviation Fuel Farms: JIG and DoD programs call for volume correction at every accounting interval; the TDU delivers API-corrected quantities at the point of measurement.
  • Disaster Relief Depots: Rapid setup is essential for humanitarian response; tool-free ground-rod mounting deploys a complete data-collection system in minutes without equipment.
  • Remote Oil & Gas Sites: Unmanned locations rely on continuous data integrity; non-volatile strapping storage preserves gauge charts through power interruptions.
  • Military Logistics Hubs: Accountability audits call for traceable volume records; the TDU supplies FuelsManager® with corrected, time-stamped inventory data.
  • Temporary Mining Operations: Mixed fuel types require accurate volumetric tracking; the TDU integrates flow meters and level gauges into a single computation hub.

How often should tank strapping be performed?

Varec recommends strapping at initial TacFuels® installation and periodically thereafter to maintain inventory accuracy. Repeat whenever a tank is relocated, re-inflated after emptying, or when measurement discrepancies appear during reconciliation.

Can the 8240 TDU be used without a 7660 Tactical Fuel Gauge?

+

The 8240 TDU requires connected field devices — either 7660 TFGs or Tactical Flow Meters — to collect measurement data. It is not a standalone inventory system and does not generate data independently.

What happens to the strapping tables if power is lost?

+

Strapping tables are stored in non-volatile memory inside the 8240 TDU. They persist through power interruptions and do not need to be rebuilt; volume calculations resume automatically once field devices come back online.

Can one 8240 TDU handle a fuel point with more than four tanks?

+

Each TDU supports up to four 7660 TFGs and four Tactical Flow Meters. Larger fuel points deploy multiple TDUs — up to 7 per Varec 8250 TIC — supporting up to 28 tanks per TacFuels® system.

Is the 8240 TDU certified for international use?

+

Yes. ISA/CSA Class 1 Division 2 Groups C and D certification covers North America, and ATEX/IECEx Ex II 3(1)G Ex nA [ia Ga] IIB T5 Gc covers international deployments (−40 °C ≤ Ta ≤ 85 °C).

What communications protocol does the 8240 TDU use?

+

The TDU communicates with the TacFuels® computing device via Modbus. For integration with external SCADA, DCS, or enterprise platforms, the Varec 8250 Tactical Interface Converter bridges TacFuels® data upstream.

What API correction is applied?

+

The 8240 TDU calculates observed fuel volumes corrected to 60 °F per API Tables 5b/6b at the point of measurement — no manual lookup or post-processing required.

How does the 8240 TDU fit with the rest of the TacFuels® family?

+

The 8240 TDU is the tank-side aggregation and computation hub: it polls up to four Varec 7660 TFGs and four flow meters per unit, feeds the Varec 8250 TIC for SCADA and DCS integration, and supports the Varec 9760 TMC tactical mobile command / computing layer running FuelsManager®.

Summary

With over a century of tank gauging heritage, Cognesense brings the Varec 8240 Tactical Data Unit to expeditionary fuel points, forward operating bases, disaster-response depots, and remote industrial sites that run on collapsible storage tanks. Automated 1,000-point tank strapping, API Tables 5b/6b volume correction to 60 °F, no-tools ground-rod mounting, non-volatile strapping memory, and ISA/CSA and ATEX/IECEx approvals make it the computation hub of the TacFuels® system — trusted wherever you need to measure, monitor, and protect what matters most.
