What makes the MCG 1500SFI unique compared to other servo gauges?

The MCG 1500SFI is a Smart Flash Infrared (SFI) servo gauge with a brushless design that uses only three moving parts — the drum assembly, gear assembly, and stepper motor — significantly reducing mechanical wear and maintenance compared to conventional servo gauges. Its Intelligent Scale Board (ISB) communicates with the CPU via a bi-directional infrared data link through the magnetic coupling, enabling field calibration without opening the explosion-proof housing.

How is calibration performed?

+

Calibration is performed using the MCG 2150 Infrared Remote Calibrator, which is intrinsically safe and can be used in hazardous areas. All power-on functions — programming, calibration, and diagnostics — are performed through the explosion-proof housing via infrared, so the housing cover never needs to be removed in a classified location. The optional MCG 1350M Ground Level Display also supports full programming and calibration from grade level, eliminating the need to climb the tank.

Can it be used for custody transfer?

+

Yes. The MCG 1500SFI delivers ≤ ±0.4 mm accuracy with ±0.1 mm sensitivity and 0.4 mm resolution, meeting the precision requirements for custody transfer measurement. It measures product level, product/water interface (BS&W), and density with custody-grade repeatability, making it suitable for fiscal metering, billing reconciliation, and inventory accounting in petroleum terminals and tank farms.

Is it compatible with existing gauging systems?

+

Yes. Simple plug-in highway interface modules enable emulation of most existing field protocols and analog outputs, including Modbus (RS-485, 2-wire and 4-wire), HART, Foundation Fieldbus, Profibus DP, WirelessHART, TCP/IP, and 4–20 mA analog. This makes the MCG 1500SFI a drop-in replacement or upgrade for virtually any existing tank gauging system.

What types of tanks can it handle?

+

The MCG 1500SFI is designed for atmospheric, 150 psi, and 300 psi pressure-rated tanks with a standard measuring range of 0–75 feet (22 m) and an optional range of 0–150 feet (46 m). It handles drum chamber temperatures from −40°F to +600°F (−40°C to +315°C), making it suitable for crude oil, refined products, LPG/LNG, cryogenic liquids, hot asphalt, molten sulfur, and other process fluids. Housing options include aluminum (standard) and 316 stainless steel, with flange sizes from 2″ to 10″ ANSI.
