For loading-rack engineers, terminal operators, and tank farm safety specialists, the Shand & Jurs 96311 Internal Safety Valve provides automatic tank isolation under fire exposure or line-failure conditions — the passive last line of defense when transfer piping, hoses, or valves downstream of the tank fail and uncontrolled product release would otherwise occur.
Unlike an external block valve that depends on operator access, power, or an external detection signal, the 96311 is a spring-loaded internal shutoff valve held open by a fusible link that releases at 212°F (or at an optional 165°F or 135°F setpoint). When the link releases, the spring closes the valve automatically, isolating the tank contents from downstream piping without operator intervention.
A pilot pallet equalizes pressure across the main pallet so the valve can be manually reopened against tank pressure without excessive operator force, and a center-pivot stem with corrosion-resistant nylon bearing maintains reliable movement over years of service.
Available in 2″–14″ sizes with ANSI 150 raised-face mounting flanges and pressure ratings up to 50 psig, the 96311 installs at bottom outlets, pump transfer lines, and loading racks handling flammable liquids.
Standard 212°F fusible element automatically releases under fire exposure, triggering spring-loaded closure without operator intervention, power, or external detection systems.
Positive internal tank shutoff isolates contents from downstream piping during line failure or fire, preventing uncontrolled product release at the tank wall.
Equalizes pressure across the main pallet, allowing safe manual reopening against tank pressure without excessive operator force after an emergency activation.
Nylon-bearing center-pivot stem prevents binding from corrosion fouling, maintaining reliable movement over extended service intervals between inspections.
Full-opening linkage maintains maximum flow capacity during normal transfer operations, avoiding restriction that would otherwise slow loading and unloading rates.
Standard mounting flange is one size larger than nominal pipe size, providing secure internal installation and supporting reliable shutoff geometry at the tank wall.

An external block valve sits on the piping downstream of the tank and depends on operator access, an actuator, or an external detection signal to close. If the external valve or its supply lines are themselves damaged by fire or impact, the tank can continue to release. The 96311 installs internally at the tank nozzle and closes passively when a fusible link releases at the rated temperature — no operator, no power, no external signal required.
Standard release temperature is 212°F. Options include 165°F for earlier activation in lower-temperature fire scenarios and 135°F for the lowest standard activation point in heat-sensitive environments. Select based on the tank’s service temperature and the expected fire-exposure profile at the installation.
A pilot pallet equalizes pressure across the main pallet, allowing manual reopening against tank pressure without excessive operator force. After inspection, fusible-link replacement, and confirmation that the downstream piping is safe, the valve can be reset and returned to service.
Maximum pressure is 3.45 barg (50 psig). Operating temperature range is ambient up to 500°F (260°C) with the PTFE packing option. Seal materials are available in GPTFE, FKM, or NBR — select based on the stored product.
Yes. A 316 stainless steel body and trim option is available for full corrosion resistance on aggressive or refrigerated service. Standard materials also include stainless steel options for the main pallet, seat, and hardware.
Standard mounting is an ANSI 150 raised-face flange, one size larger than the nominal pipe size. Options include an ANSI 300 lb flange for higher pressure class piping and an EN1092-1 PN16 flange for metric piping compatibility.
For those services, the Shand & Jurs Model 96330 / 96330I Internal Safety Shutoff & Operating Valve is the recommended model — it handles the higher operating pressures and bi-directional shutoff required for LPG, ammonia, and liquid hydrocarbon transfer. The 96311 is scoped to atmospheric and low-pressure tank service up to 50 psig.
With over a century of tank-safety heritage inside Cognesense, the Shand & Jurs 96311 Internal Safety Valve is the passive internal shutoff trusted to isolate tank contents during fire exposure or line failure — without relying on operators, power, or external detection. Its fusible-link release, spring-loaded main pallet, and pilot equalization for safe reopening make it the last line of defense at bottom outlets, loading racks, and pump transfer lines handling flammable liquids. It is chosen wherever you need to measure, monitor, and protect what matters most.
