Unlike an external block valve that depends on operator access, power, or an external detection signal, the 96311 is a spring-loaded internal shutoff valve held open by a fusible link that releases at 212°F (or at an optional 165°F or 135°F setpoint). When the link releases, the spring closes the valve automatically, isolating the tank contents from downstream piping without operator intervention.

A pilot pallet equalizes pressure across the main pallet so the valve can be manually reopened against tank pressure without excessive operator force, and a center-pivot stem with corrosion-resistant nylon bearing maintains reliable movement over years of service.

How does the 96311 differ from an external emergency block valve?

An external block valve sits on the piping downstream of the tank and depends on operator access, an actuator, or an external detection signal to close. If the external valve or its supply lines are themselves damaged by fire or impact, the tank can continue to release.
