For specifying engineers, facility designers, and operators of non-pressurized storage systems, the Shand & Jurs 94240 delivers continuous atmospheric venting for tanks designed to operate at ambient pressure, with no pressure or vacuum regulation.
Unlike conservation vents that hold the tank closed against a weight-loaded or spring-loaded pallet, the 94240 contains no pallets, springs, or sealing components. The result is unrestricted tank-to-atmosphere communication without blowdown behavior, setpoint drift, or mechanical wear.
A screened weather hood limits ingress of debris, precipitation, and insects while allowing continuous airflow. Standard cast aluminum construction supports general outdoor and industrial service; cast iron is available for heavier-duty requirements and alternate materials are offered for severe exposure.
Available 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 10 inches with ANSI Class 125/150 flat-face connections, with optional threaded connections and a cable-operated flame snuffer for fire suppression on open atmospheric tank service.
Maintains unrestricted tank-to-atmosphere communication without pressure or vacuum regulation, matching non-pressurized tank designs that do not require conservation venting.
Limits ingress of precipitation, airborne debris, and insects while preserving continuous airflow, protecting the tank interior from contamination sources.
Eliminates the pallet wear, blowdown behavior, and setpoint drift associated with regulated vent designs, simplifying long-term maintenance exposure.
Covers standard atmospheric tank nozzle dimensions for water, agricultural, and overflow service without custom machining or adapter plates.
Integrates into standard refinery, chemical, and utility piping without field modification, simplifying installation and retrofit into existing tank-top hardware.
Cable-operated disc provides fire suppression capability for exposed atmospheric tank installations; tank height is specified at time of order.

No. The 94240 is a free vent — an open atmospheric vent with no pallets, springs, or sealing components. It is specified where continuous unrestricted airflow is required by design. If the tank needs to be held closed against a pressure or vacuum setpoint, a conservation vent such as the Shand & Jurs 9413X weight-loaded or 9414X spring-loaded series is the correct choice.
The screened weather hood keeps out debris, rain, snow, and insects while allowing continuous airflow, protecting tank interiors from contamination without restricting vent capacity.
A flame snuffer is available as an option. It uses a cable-operated disc to suppress fire on exposed atmospheric-tank service. When ordering, specify tank height so the cable is sized correctly.
The 94240 is available in 2″, 3″, 4″, 6″, 8″, and 10″ nominal sizes with ANSI Class 125/150 flat-face flanges. A threaded connection option is available for installations where flanged mounting is not required.
Standard body material is cast aluminum. Cast iron is available as a heavier-duty alternative. Alternate screen, lever, and disc materials — including stainless steel, cast iron, cast brass, and cast aluminum — are offered for corrosive or weight-sensitive applications.
The 94240 is the base open atmospheric vent. The 94241 is a hooded variant with extended hood geometry that provides stronger protection against wind-driven rain and coastal exposure. Where the installation is sheltered or indoors, the 94240 is typically sufficient; for exposed outdoor, coastal, or large-size applications, the 94241 is recommended.
With over a century of tank-safety heritage inside Cognesense, the Shand & Jurs 94240 free vent provides continuous atmospheric venting for non-pressurized storage systems where pressure and vacuum control are handled by separate devices or design. With no moving components, a screened weather hood, and standard ANSI Class 125/150 connections, the 94240 delivers straightforward, specification-ready atmospheric venting across water, agricultural, and overflow service. It fits within Cognesense’s tank-safety portfolio to help engineers measure, monitor, and protect what matters most.
