Shand & Jurs 9402X Series Conservation Vent

For terminal operators, emissions engineers, and tank farm specifiers, the Shand & Jurs 9402X Series Conservation Vent delivers low-leakage pressure and vacuum relief for atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks under frequent thermal breathing cycles.

Unlike air-groove pallet designs that leak around 1 SCFH at 90% of setpoint, the 9402X uses diaphragm-sealed vertical-lift pallets with optional Expanda-Seal technology to hold under 0.5 SCFH at 95% of setpoint, cutting routine vapor loss.

Three configurations cover site-specific vapor handling: 94020 open vent with weather hood, 94021 closed vent with enlarged outlet for pipe-away recovery, and 94022 closed vent with equal inlet and outlet. Relief capacity is sized per API 2000 using Shand & Jurs WinSize.

Applications include fuel terminals, chemical storage, cryogenic service, and VOC-regulated facilities where stable setpoints, predictable blowdown, and minimized evaporative losses matter for both regulatory reporting and product economics.

Features

Diaphragm-Sealed Pallets

Vertically lifting pallets maintain stable setpoints and minimize continuous vapor loss during routine thermal breathing and low-pressure cycling on atmospheric tanks.

Expanda-Seal Option

At setpoints of 1.5 oz/in² or above, sealing force rises as pressure approaches setpoint, holding leakage below 0.5 SCFH at 95% of setpoint.

Integral Machined Seats

Precision-machined integral seats provide consistent sealing surfaces, supporting long-term setpoint stability while eliminating additional leakage paths through fabricated seat rings.

Three Discharge Configurations

Open, pipe-away enlarged-outlet, and equal-size closed versions align the vent with atmospheric release, vapor recovery, or remote discharge strategies.

Material Flexibility

Aluminum, carbon steel, and 316 stainless bodies with FEP, FKM, PFA, or NBR diaphragms match a wide range of vapor chemistries and temperature ranges.

API 2000 Sizing

Relief capacity is sized per API 2000 using Shand & Jurs WinSize, supporting defensible vent selection based on anticipated flows and pressure drops.

Applications

  • Fuel Terminals: Controls breathing emissions on gasoline, distillate, and finished-product tanks where continuous vapor losses erode product value and complicate emissions reporting.
  • Chemical Storage: Delivers predictable low-pressure and vacuum relief for solvent and specialty chemical tanks where tight sealing limits routine VOC release into the atmosphere.
  • Tank Farms: Supports stable pressure and vacuum setpoints across large inventories of atmospheric storage tanks subject to frequent thermal breathing cycles and pump-in events.
  • Cryogenic Service: Cryogenic hood option prevents snow and ice accumulation on the pallet, maintaining vent operability through extreme cold-weather and low-temperature tank service.
  • VOC-Regulated Facilities: Low-leakage Expanda-Seal performance supports VOC control strategies and reduces uncertainty in emissions permitting, reporting, and compliance documentation.
  • Water and Wastewater: Protects atmospheric storage tanks at water and wastewater sites from overpressure and vacuum during filling, draw-off, and temperature swings.

When should I specify the 9402X instead of the 9404X spring-loaded series?

The 9402X is a weight-loaded conservation vent designed for low-pressure applications typically under 1 psi. For setpoints above 1 psi (up to 15 psig), the spring-loaded 9404X Series is the correct selection. The two series cover different operating pressure bands but share the Expanda-Seal option and diaphragm sealing approach.

What is Expanda-Seal and when does it help?

+

Expanda-Seal is a sealing technology that increases pallet seating force as operating pressure approaches setpoint. It is available on settings of 1.5 oz/in² and above and reduces leakage to under 0.5 SCFH at 95% of setpoint, compared to roughly 1 SCFH at 90% for a standard air-groove pallet. On high-value liquids this can preserve thousands of dollars of product per tank per year.

How is vent capacity sized?

+

Vent capacity is sized per API 2000 using the Shand & Jurs WinSize software. Sizing is based on anticipated flow rates and allowable pressure drops for the tank in question, so relief selection is defensible against the applicable code-of-construction and safety program.

Which discharge configuration should I choose?

+

The 94020 open vent with weather hood is used when atmospheric release is acceptable. The 94021 closed vent with an outlet larger than the inlet is used when vapor is piped to a recovery header. The 94022 closed vent with equal inlet and outlet is used when the pipe run to recovery is short and downstream sizing matches.

Are hazardous area approvals available?

+

Yes. ATEX is available as a certified option on the 9402X Series. Use the exact approval code on the datasheet when writing tag data for hazardous-area installations.

What options support cold-weather and cryogenic service?

+

All-weather insulation jackets prevent condensate freezing around pallets in cold climates, and the cryogenic hood prevents snow or ice accumulation on the pallet in extreme cold or cryogenic tank service. Both options keep the vent operable through the full design temperature range.

Does the 9402X integrate with vapor recovery headers?

+

Yes. The 94021 and 94022 closed versions provide the pipe-away connection required to route tank breathing to a vapor recovery system. Paired with a Shand & Jurs 94261 Vapor Recovery Regulator upstream, the vent then only opens on genuine excursions rather than on every pump-in or thermal swing.

Summary

With over a century of tank-safety heritage inside Cognesense, the Shand & Jurs 9402X Series Conservation Vent is chosen when low-leakage pressure and vacuum relief is required on atmospheric and low-pressure storage tanks. Diaphragm-sealed vertical-lift pallets, optional Expanda-Seal technology, and three discharge configurations stabilize tank breathing, reduce fugitive emissions, and extend vent life across fuel, chemical, and VOC-regulated service. For terminals and process sites alike, it is trusted wherever you need to measure, monitor, and protect what matters most.
